Twickenham, London

Marketing and Business Communications Officer – fixed term contract 6 months - £26,000 p.a. Full time: 5 days per week. Start Date ASAP.

We’re recruiting for a new Marketing and Business Communications Officer who has a good understanding of marketing,  a particular interest in promoting local business and lot of ‘get up and go’. If this sounds like you, come and join our small, hard-working, friendly marketing team at the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

The RichmondCard is a local ‘smartcard’ that combines a resident parking discount, Library and Leisure cards all-in-one. The card also enables holders to benefit from offers and discounts that businesses and attractions around the borough.

This Marketing and Business Communications Officer role is a full time opportunity to further the offers of the Richmond Card campaign to allow maximum value for money for residents and maximum take-up of the Richmond Card by local businesses.  In addition, the role is responsible for developing and creating the fortnightly Richmond Card e-newsletter, updating and creating content for the Richmond Card social media accounts and delivering targeted Richmond Card campaigns.

The postholder will also be responsible for other campaigns and communications activities in the annual work plan.  This includes: organising monthly stakeholder events, supporting Mayoral events, working with local businesses to look at partnership opportunities for Council campaigns e.g. Full of Life.  

As such we’re looking for an all-rounder who understands marketing and commercial needs of small/medium enterprises. In addition, we are looking for someone who can design and deliver marketing strategies and other high priority campaigns for Richmond Council.  

The position is initially for a six-month period.

 

Purpose of Job; (Brief summary of why the job exists, and what the main outcomes expected are)

  1. To generate a greater level of business take up for the Richmond Card business offers scheme.
  2. Design and deliver marketing activities for the Richmond Card business offers scheme – including digital and social media.
  3. To manage and integrate the campaign across other publications and channels as directed by the Communications Manager


Key duties and responsibilities of current role

  1. Proactively liaise with potential businesses to offer discounts and offers for the Richmond Card. This will involve travelling around the borough and arranging local business meetings.
  2. Lead on promoting the Richmond Card offers scheme to residents.
  3. Creation and ongoing updating of the business stakeholder list for targeting and marketing the two schemes in the future.
  4. Lead on design and delivery of other key campaigns
  5. Establish efficient and effective working relationships with local business partners and other stakeholders
  6. Feed progress and developments into colleagues via weekly and monthly reporting.
  7. Support the Communications Manager on other communications / marketing projects and tasks as and when necessary
  8. Undertake other duties as directed in line with the overall communications objectives of the council.

 

Work and Supervision

Due to the nature of this position requires that the post holder travel across the borough to meet local businesses regularly throughout the week. They will be required to manage and direct their own work but within the parameters of an agreed work programme and the overall communications plan.  Balancing the Richmond Card and other campaign priorities.

The post holder reports to the Communications Manager who will allocate their work and set deadlines and priorities, which they will be expected to meet autonomously. The post holder will be required to exercise his/her professional judgement in delivering the requirement of this role and meeting the agreed targets.

 

Person Specification

Work experience

  • You will need an understanding of the needs of small/medium sized local enterprises.
  • You will need experience of helping businesses deliver marketing objectives.
  • You will need experience of design and delivering marketing campaigns.
  • You will need experience of writing marketing collateral.
  • You will need a good understanding of social media.

 Education & Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years general experience of working in a communications or business role
  • Evidence of designing and delivering effective communications/marketing activity
  • Considerable and demonstrable experience of working with minimum supervision
  • Experience in generating new and creative ideas
  • Experience or understanding of public sector communications
  • Ability to develop new contacts from a standing start in a fast moving consumer environment (cold calling)
